Tronsmart Onyx Ace

The Tronsmart Onyx Ace both looks good and is very compact. They have aptX, so the sound is spacious and good, but is it all good? Let’s find out!

In the box

We get the two earphones, the charging case in white colour, but if you prefer a different colour, it’s also available in black. For charging we finally have a USB type-C cable. There’s also a warranty card and a user manual included in a few different languages, so most of us should be covered here.

The Case – 400 mAh – 3 extra charges

The case itself is made of a shiny white plastic, so it is a bit slippery to hold, but it’s not too bad. On the front is a battery indicator, and at the bottom is the charging connector. To check the remaining battery we can open the lid. On some other cases we have to lift one of the earphones to activate the indicator, but luckily here we can use the lid. At 50% volume the battery is informed to last up to 24 hours, but who plays music at such low levels?

To charge the earphones, we have to place them back into the case and close the lid. They don’t charge while it’s open. Only the top and bottom light on the case will light up, and they will stay on until they’re finished charging, which from empty to full takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes.

The lights will also show the charge progress while charging the case, and when it’s done the top light will stop blinking.

This case is quite compact, so it will easily fit in a pocket, and I can almost close my hand completely around it. It measures only 48 x 23 x 57,5 mm and weighs 37 grams, so it’s easy to bring with you, and will easily fit in any pocket. To compare the size, I took out the Haylou GT1 Plus and the Haylou T15. See the comparison in this video.

The Earphones look good and have aptX

The earphones are also made of shiny white plastic, and it’s quite easy to see where they got the inspiration for the design from. Do you see it or is it just me?

They are rated IPX5, but they’re not waterproof, so please don’t use them in the shower. On the side is what i thought could be a proximity sensor, for automatically starting and pausing the music, but sadly it doesn’t have this function.
The metallic area on top of the stem is the touch control and the noise cancelling microphone.

At the bottom are the charging connectors, and the microphone. Inside we have a bluetooth 5 chip from Qualcomm with aptX. It works very well, so I haven’t had a single dropout while testing them, and the range works fine up to 15 meters.

Very comfortable to wear

When it comes to comfort, the Onyx Ace sits very nicely in the ears, even for many hours at a time. They have a good fit, and I can hardly feel them in the ears at all. They weigh only 4 grams each, and I do have a feeling that they sit a bit loose, but that’s not the case. They’re quite sturdy, and don’t even fall out when I shake my head.

Battery

Even though the battery can last up to 5 hours per charge (at 50% volume), I got about 4 hours with loud volume, so it’s not bad at all. The case has enough power to recharge the earphones a bit more than 3 times, so I got a total of 17 hours of loud music including the initial charge of the earphones, which I think is acceptable for such a small case. But if you play at about 50% volume, you should get a total of up to 24 hours.

Pairing and connection

It’s simple and quick thing to do. Just open the lid, select it on the phone and accept the pairing when it pops up. It will ask you to confirm twice, and that’s because it will pair with both earphones, to make it possible to seamlessly swap between them. We can of course also see the remaining battery on the phone.

Closing the lid while the earphones are in the case, will cut the connection and start the charging process.

Latency in games and video

One thing they don’t struggle with, is delay. The Qualcomm aptX chip does a very good job in videos, as I can’t notice any delay at all. I tested on Youtube and Netflix, and it’s a pleasure to use.

But if you plan on using the Tronsmart Onyx Ace for gaming, in games that require fast reactions to sound, you will probably be a bit dissapointed. In my opinion there’s too much delay, especially in games like PUBG, where the reaction time is critical.

Microphone for calls

Calls sound good on these earphones, and the microphone is not bad at all. It even handles noise quite well, as you can hear in the sample I recorded (watch the video). The quality is good enough for making some calls, even with a bit of background noise. They do struggle a bit when there’s a lot of noise, but it’s still kinda usable.

Music and call controls

The touch controls area is on the upper part of the stem, where we have some chrome details. It works very well, and is easy to use, but to avoid accidental touches I have to hold the bottom part of the stem. If you hold at the top, it’s quite easy to accidentally touch the controls.

For controlling music we have the following commands:

  • Double tap the right earphone to play or pause.
  • Double tapping the left one, will do the same.
  • Hold for two seconds on the right one, will skip to the next song.
  • The same on the left one will go back or to the previous song.
  • We can also adjust the volume on these, by single tapping. Once on the right one, will raise the volume, and once on the left one will lower it.
  • Triple tapping will open the assistant.
  • We can of course also answer and reject calls. Double tap will answer, and to reject just tap and hold.

Every time you do a command, there’s a sound confirming the action. If you do a command on the right earphone, this sound effect is only played on this side.

Sound Quality – Tronsmart Onyx Ace

When it comes to sound quality, these earphones have 13 mm drivers, that sound crips and clear. The balance is good from high too low. They sound quite spacious and nicely detailed in the mids and highs.

The bass is punchy, but the earphones are not of the in-ear style, so there’s not going to be a perfect seal against the surroundings. Meaning I can hear the surroundings, and I don’t need to take them out of the ears if I need to talk to someone. Some people like this and some don’t.

Anyway, the mids and highs are good with a nice separation between instruments and vocals. The bass is punchy and nice, but as expected it doesn’t go very deep, so the rumbling bass is lacking. But, for this style of earphones, the bass is still quite good.

The volume also goes very loud, and I usually play at around 70-80%, before it gets too loud. On the box it’s informed that the battery can last up to 24 hours, but that’s at 50% volume, and let’s be honest, nobody plays music at 50%. I like loud music, and at 70-80% each charge lasted about 4 hours, and gave me a total of 17 hours of music. But that’s not bad for such a small case.

Tronsmart Onyx Ace

Overall the Tronsmart Onyx Ace is a nice set of earphones, with good comfort and good battery. The sound is good and spacious, and even if the bass is good compared to other earphones of this type,  I personally prefer earphones with more powerful bass.
